Olivia Ruello of Business Chicks: Unleash your Potential
Our inaugural Women Who Can, Business Chicks CEO Olivia Ruello, talks to us about confidence, finding a support tribe and how she defines success.
Olivia began her career in industrial relations before moving into senior roles in the HR and recruitment industries. At just 24 years old, she was appointed General Manager of a well-respected recruitment firm and led her team to win multiple awards.
Now, as CEO of Business Chicks, Olivia is committed to creating a human way of doing business and empowering women, and has developed a Women’s Circle and gender-inclusive strategy. She is dedicated to helping women harness their strengths: empathy, kindness, collaboration and connection, to create a generation of leaders who care.
Olivia’s five tips for unleashing your potential:
- Believe in yourself and back yourself no matter what.
- Find a tribe that’s always got your back.
- Surround yourself with people who love and believe in you.
- Be confident.
- Be brave and bold – you’ve got this!

Who is your Woman Who Can?
Right now, I’m inspired by Gillian Triggs. She spoke at our International Women’s Day event in Melbourne and said: “It’s time for some vulgarity, boldness, exaggeration. I think incandescent rage can be rocket fuel for action. Let us speak up, stand up, shed the elegance and let’s do it together.”
I could not have succeeded without...
The women in my life who told me they believed in me.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Don’t worry about what other people think of you. Focus your energy on the people you love. Also never confuse kindness with weakness; some of the strongest women I know are also the kindest.
What’s the bravest thing you’ve ever done?
My proudest work moment...
Becoming the CEO of Business Chicks Australia. The sense of intimacy and connection you find here is something you don’t see anywhere else. To be able to lead a business where women support each other is an amazing feeling.
I am happiest when...
I’m with my family and friends drinking wine and eating really good food. Or swimming in the Indian Ocean back home in Western Australia.
What song makes you feel like you could take on the world?
Beyonce’s Run the World
Different for everyone. To me, success is feeling like you’ve made a difference every day, even just having a really impactful conversation with someone.
My secret skill is...
I must have double-jointed ankles because I can turn my feet entirely around.
I admire in myself the ability to...
Empathise and understand other people’s perspective.
If I had a mathematical workwear style formula, it would read:
Slim pants + blazer + killer accessories = Ready for anything.
What does style mean to me?
It’s feeling confident in whatever you put on.
My go-to outfit?
A pair of jeans, jacket, silk T-shirt, killer heels and great earrings.
